Liverpool and Bayern Munich fans praised by Merseyside Police despite three arrests

Merseyside Police have paid tribute to supporters after trouble was kept to a minimum at Liverpool's Champions League last-16 match with Bayern Munich.

Three arrests were made surrounding the Anfield clash, a 21-year-old from Munich being cautioned for drunk and disorderly behaviour, a 30-year-old from Liverpool arrested on suspicion of ticket touting and a 31-year-old from France on suspicion of assault.

But there were few other signs of trouble before, during and after the match which ended in a 0-0 draw and sets up a tense second leg that will take place in Munich's Allianz Arena on March 13.

Merseyside Police Superintendent Dave Charnock said: "Although we did see a small number of arrests yesterday, the overwhelming majority of Liverpool and Bayern Munich fans who both went to the game and watched it at various locations across the city were extremely well behaved.

Liverpool’s draw against Bayern in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie at Anfield was not as bad as it seems, Steve McMahon and Tim Sherwood told The Debate

"Any sporting event means a large policing operation and it is always a pleasure to accommodate fans and welcome them to the city when they are so well spirited.

"I would like to thank the supporters of both clubs for their cooperation and assistance both before, during and after the match."
