Galatasaray have sacked former Italy World Cup coach Cesare Prandelli following a string of poor results that culminated in their exit from the Champions League.

The club's deputy president Abdurrahim Albayrak announced that the Turkish club had decided to part ways with Prandelli a day after the club's 2-0 loss to Anderlecht - a result that eliminated the team from the Champions League and meant they also failed to qualify for the Europa League.

Anadolu also announced that Brazilian goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel will take over at the Istanbul club on a temporary basis.

Over the weekend, Galatasaray surrendered the lead in the Turkish league after a 3-0 home defeat by Trabzonspor.

More from Champions League Group Stage

Prandelli took over as Italy coach in 2010 and guided them to the 2014 World Cup but they were eliminated at the group stage - the Italian joined Galatasaray in July shortly after leaving his national team.
