Experienced striker off to Azerbaijan

Deon Burton has linked up with Tony Adams at Azerbaijani outfit Gabala, penning a two-year contract. Adams was recently appointed manager of Gabala, having been away from football since leaving Portsmouth in February 2009. He has wasted no time in raiding the British ranks for new recruits, with Burton having been snapped up as a free agent. The former Jamaica international is 'excited by the challenge' awaiting him at Gabala and feels, at 33, the time is right for a change. "This move ticks all the boxes for me," Burton told skysports.com. "I have played in the Premier League, the World Cup and now I have the chance to play abroad.

Ambition

"They are an ambitious club and I am excited by the challenge. "Obviously Tony Adams being there played a big part in my decision and I am looking forward to playing under him." Burton has opted to move on after growing tired of waiting on Charlton Athletic, with whom he ended the 2009/10 campaign, to offer him fresh terms. His agent, Darryl Powell, added: "We waited on Charlton but a deal failed to materialise. "We were impressed by the ambition (of Gabala) after speaking to them and they have shown their ambition by getting Tony as manager. "This is a new and exciting experience for Deon."
