Veteran striker departs Benfica for Portuguese rivals

Braga have signed Portuguese striker Nuno Gomes on a free transfer after his deal at Benfica expired. Gomes was told last month his contract would not be extended, ending his 12-year spell at the club. The 34-year-old has spent two stints at Benfica either side of a two-year spell in Italy with Fiorentina, scoring 126 goals in 292 league games for the Portuguese side. He also won domestic titles with the Eagles in 2004/05 and 2009/10, but did not start a match last season. Gomes has now penned a 12-month deal with Benfica's Primeira Liga rivals Braga, who reached the Europa League final last term, ultimately missing out to Porto.

Fighting

"This is just like my first day at school," said Gomes at his presentation ceremony on Friday. "I chose Braga because of how much the club has grown recently. "Braga will be fighting for the top four places in the Portuguese league." Gomes is Portugal's fourth-highest goalscorer with 29 goals from 77 appearances for his country. He will compete in the Europa League play-offs with Braga next season after they finished fourth in the league last term.
