Gareth Southgate's final game as caretaker manager of England ended in frustration as Spain snatched a late draw at Wembley on Tuesday night.
The final international match of 2016 saw the likes of Jamie Vardy and Jesse Lingard given a chance to impress as Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane were sent back to their clubs to recover from minor injuries.
But what did former England captain Terry Butcher make of the performances? He gave each player a rating out of 10 - and also delivered his verdict on Southgate.
Joe Hart - 7
Joe didn't have a shot to save, which is nice to see, but I thought his distribution was very good. He looked good when he played out from the back and it was pleasing to see.
Nathaniel Clyne - 7.5
Kyle Walker played against Scotland, but I think Clyne stepped in well against Spain. The two of them now have a great battle over the right-back spot. He came forward really well, defended really well and probably had his best game for England.
John Stones - 8
Despite the two late goals, which was a sick feeling for England fans, I thought Stones was very good. He headed every ball, he blocked it when he needed to and he passed well. He got into a problem every now and again when he came out with the ball, but we want to encourage that. He has had a bit of stick, but he stood up to the game and he needs to be encouraged.
Gary Cahill - 7.5
I think Cahill and Stones are forming a good partnership now. They are getting good game time together, which is crucial, and I don't think he made a mistake during his 45 minutes on the field. Like the other defenders, he read the Spanish runs very well.
Danny Rose - 8
Rose was tenacious, strong and he passed the ball well. He made way for Aaron Cresswell at the end but I like him because he's so gutsy and he's a good defender.
Eric Dier - 7.5
Dier formed a good partnership with Jordan Henderson in the middle of the park. He was always quick to slot into the back four whenever one of the centre-halves went forward with the ball. It was a good, strong all-round performance.
Jordan Henderson - 8
He led by example. He showed good strength and got about his opponent well. He also whipped in a really good ball for Jamie Vardy's goal and I thought he was terrific in his all-round play.
Raheem Sterling - 7
He still has a lot to do in terms of consistency, but I thought he had one of his better games tonight. He even got booked - well done Raheem! I like a bit of that! There's a lot more to come from him, but he's getting better and better.
Adam Lallana - 7.5
He was only on the field for 25 minutes, but I will still give him a good mark. His pass for Vardy to earn the penalty was world-class and he showed no nerves in taking the spot-kick. He has been England's best player for quite some time and it was unfortunate to see him get an injury. He is quality.
Jesse Lingard - 7
Lingard still has a lot to learn at international level, but he applied himself really well. He wanted to join in and interplay with his team-mates. He played a lovely one-two with Sterling early on and it was a good, solid game; probably his best game for England.
Jamie Vardy - 8
This was the sort of game that Vardy loves because he was able to get onto long balls when England broke out. He gave England depth and led the line really well. He was brave and it was great to see him score a goal. The mannequin celebration was brilliant too. I loved that!
Theo Walcott - 6
Walcott got booked tonight, which is unheard of. He and Sterling got booked, which really shows you the commitment! I thought he did well in different roles on the left and right. I have questioned whether he wants to play at international level, but he has shown he does and I enjoyed what he did.
Tom Heaton - 7
Heaton made a couple of good saves, but got nutmegged for the winning goal, which is disappointing. The experience will stand him in good stead.
Phil Jagielka - 7
He doesn't look out of place at this level. He handled himself well, passed the ball and he obviously has a good partnership with Stones as he played with him at Everton. He didn't let England down and is a good, experienced player to have around.
Andros Townsend, Marcus Rashford, Aaron Cresswell - 5
They weren't on the field long enough to give them a higher mark, but it was particularly pleasing to see Aaron Cresswell come on as an ex-Ipswich player. I still think Townsend should have gone to the Euros and Rashford is still raw, but is a talent with so much pace.
Manager: Gareth Southgate - 9
I thought the organisation and spirit were very good, while the gameplan and the tactics were spot on. He deserved to win the game tonight for everything he did. He laid out his team well to defend and drop off and play on the counter-attack and that suited England to a tee. It also forced Spain to make a tactical change, which you would never have thought would have happened. That's a real feather in his cap and I really hope he gets the job full-time. If he doesn't, then football isn't the game I thought it was.
