Experienced manager signs four-year contract

The Football Association has confirmed the appointment of Roy Hodgson as the new England coach on a four-year contract. Hodgson has been handed the task of replacing Fabio Capello, who resigned in February after John Terry was removed as England captain. Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp had been the overwhelming favourite to succeed Capello, but the FA made its approach for Hodgson on Sunday. The 64-year-old's contract at West Bromwich Albion was due to expire in the summer and he held talks with FA officials on Monday. A deal has now been agreed, with the former Fulham and Liverpool manager agreeing a contract which takes him through to the 2016 European Championship in France. However, he will remain in charge of West Brom for the club's final two games of the Premier League season before officially taking on the England role on 14th May. Hodgson boasts vast experience at club and international level, having previously managed the Switzerland, Finland and UAE national teams. He has also won eight league titles during his career, and has coached the likes of Inter Milan, Blackburn Rovers and FC Copenhagen, whilst he took Fulham to the 2010 Europa League final. His first match as England coach will be a Euro 2012 friendly warm-up on 26th May in Norway, where he has previous coaching experience. England will also meet Belgium at Wembley in early June before facing France, Sweden and co-hosts Ukraine at the European Championship.
