James McFadden has spoken of his excitement at the new role he is due to take up with the Scotland national side.
McFadden - who was briefly part of the Motherwell coaching set-up and had a short spell playing with Queen of the South earlier in the season - has been confirmed as an assistant coach by Scotland boss Alex McLeish.
"I am very excited, it came out of the blue," he told Sky Sports News.
"I had a text message from Alex [McLeish] when he was in talks, before anything [on his Scotland job] was announced, asking if I would be interested in joining his staff.
"I am a proud Scotsman, very patriotic and I would do anything for them. I am delighted he asked me and thought about me in that role.
"We can look forward to hopefully qualifying for the next tournament. I think it is a good time to be involved with the national set-up.
"We have a lot of good young players and I don't think there is too much needed to get that extra little bit to qualify [for Euro 2020]."
Scotland missed out on qualification for this summer's World Cup in Russia but former Motherwell, Everton and Birmingham forward McFadden sees cause for optimism in the current crop of players.
"I've worked under Alex before and he is a good man-manager and the set-up he is going to bring is exciting," he added.
"There's a good balance of young and old. It's something that's totally new to me and something I'm really looking forward to."
