Anderlecht defender James Lawrence says he does not know all the Wales squad because he does not follow English football regularly

Wales new boy James Lawrence admits he has been getting to know some of his team-mates as he is "not familiar" with English football.

The 26-year-old Anderlecht defender has been included for the first time for the games against Denmark and Albania with even manager Ryan Giggs admitting he has "gone under the radar".

Few people in Wales will have heard of Lawrence, who went to Europe at an early age and played for the Ajax youth team before moving to Slovakia for first-team football ahead of his switch to Anderlecht in the summer.

It has only been realised in the last few months that he is eligible to play for Wales through his grandmother who was born in Haverfordwest.

"I think it's quite a long story really," Lawrence told Sky Sports. "It started when I was small, moving to Europe and playing there.

"That took me outside the UK and I think they don't look over there that much. Obviously playing for a big club like Anderlecht brought a lot of attention my way and made them aware that I was even eligible to play for Wales.

"After they looked at me there they decided I may be a good fit for the team and I got the call-up."

Lawrence, who played alongside Christian Eriksen at the Ajax academy, says he is having to adjust fast as he is not an avid follower of the Premier League.

"I was aware of a lot of the players, obviously some of them I didn't know very well," he added.

Wales manager Ryan Giggs is excited to have Gareth Bale back in his squad despite the forward's ongoing difficulties at Real Madrid

"I'm not that familiar with English football, like the Prem and the Championship. I don't follow it that much so you could say it was all a bit of a learning curve for me coming in and learning who's who and things like that

"It's fine, it's always nice to come into a new squad especially when all you've all got the same goal and everyone is focused on the game on Friday."

Learning the Welsh national anthem is also on Lawrence's agenda over the next few days but he does not think it will be a major problem.

"I've listened to it quite a lot," he went on. "I've always loved the Welsh national anthem, I thought it was one of the best national anthems out there.

"Obviously I will have to learn it at some point but yeah I've been listening to it a few times."
