Martin O'Neill says Harry Arter is happy to be back in the Republic of Ireland squad after holding clear-the-air talks with Roy Keane

Harry Arter has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for this month’s UEFA Nations League games against Denmark and Wales.

The Cardiff City midfielder returns after missing last month's games against Wales and Poland following a row with Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane.

"Roy and him have had a conversation," said Ireland boss Martin O'Neill.

"Harry is pretty happy, he wants to be in the squad, he wants to play and put it behind him. And I think Roy does as well."

Rice is still considering his international future but O'Neill remains hopeful he will commit to Ireland

Declan Rice has not been included as he continues to mull over his international future.

The West Ham defender has played three times for Ireland but withdrew from their squad last month to consider whether he wanted to represent England instead.

"I've spoken to Declan and his family, they want a little more time to make their minds up and I'm comfortable with that," said O'Neill.

As well as Arter, O'Neill welcomes back James McClean, Shane Long and Sean Maguire after they missed the September games through injury.

There is also a first call-up for Richie Towell, who is currently on loan at Rotherham from Brighton.

But Ireland will be without captain Seamus Coleman due to a foot injury, while Stephen Ward (knee) and Jonathan Walters (Achilles) are also absentees.

Ireland were thumped 4-1 by Wales in last month's UEFA Nations League opener. They face Denmark at the Aviva Stadium on October 13, with Wales visiting Dublin three days later.
