The international future of David Luiz looked to be in question after a poor performance and a needless sending-off left coach Carlos Dunga fuming in the aftermath of Brazil's 1-1 draw against Argentina on Friday.

Luiz was booked after 86 minutes for throwing an elbow and he was lucky not to get sent off for the rash intervention.

However, the Paris Saint-Germain defender did not take the warning and two minutes later he lunged in with his studs up and was given a straight red by the Paraguayan referee.

"He deserved to be sent off," a stern Dunga told reporters afterwards. "There's nothing to complain about."

Meanwhile, Argentina boss Gerardo Martino was encouraged by his team's attacking intent in Buenos Aires, but knows it is only results that matter as they remain winless in three World Cup qualifiers.

Ezequiel Lavezzi put Argentina ahead 33 minutes into the rearranged match, but Lima's 58th minute equaliser ensured the spoils were shared.

"We had control of the game," said Martino, whose side now head to Colombia.

"They came at us once as they got the draw. It was a positive performance, but we need points and must win in Colombia. If we can play like we did tonight, I will welcome it."

Brazil are only slightly better off than Argentina with four points from their three qualifiers so far, but could be happier with a point from a trip to face their old rivals.

"Playing in the Monumental [stadium] is very difficult," said Chelsea midfielder Willian.

"We wanted to win this game against Argentina, but we got an important away point.

"We missed with some of our passing in the first half, and Argentina could take advantage of the counter-attacks. But in the second half we were better and almost turned the game."
