Sergio Aguero will not travel to Madrid for Argentina's friendly against Spain on Tuesday, the country's football association has announced.

Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli said on Thursday that the Manchester City striker would miss Friday's friendly against Italy at the Etihad, with Aguero recovering from a knee injury.

He will now be released from the squad to continue his recovery, having undergone intensive treatment in Abu Dhabi on City's recent warm-weather training camp.

A tweet from Seleccion Argentina read: "Sergio Aguero will be released from the group to continue the recovery of his left knee."

Aguero, who sustained the injury during a City training session and subsequently missed the 2-0 away win at Stoke, has spent this week with his Argentina team-mates while they have been based at the Etihad, but has not taken part in any full training sessions.

Sampaoli had said on Thursday: "We have been talking to team doctors at Manchester City and evaluating the situation to see if there is any possibility he can play any part in the two games.
