Brazil midfielder Fred has been suspended from international football until June 2016 following a failed drugs test.

The 22-year-old, who plays for Shakhtar Donetsk, tested positive for the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide during the Copa America in June 2015.

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) announced on Tuesday that he will be suspended from all CONMEBOL games until June 27 next year.

He will therefore miss his country's World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Paraguay in March.

Fred, full-name Frederico Rodrigues Santos, can continue playing for Ukrainian club Shakhtar, who were drawn against Schalke in the last-32 of the Europa League on Monday, unless FIFA decides to extend the ban.

Fred has six caps for Brazil and was a surprise choice in the Copa America squad, starting the first two games against Peru and Colombia.

He was dropped for the third match, a 2-1 victory over Venezuela, and also missed the penalty shoot-out defeat by Paraguay in the quarter-finals.
