Roberto Carlos says Brazil are focused on winning, not only entertaining.
Roberto Carlos says Brazil's goal is to win matches, dismissing suggestions that the reigning world champions are overly focused on playing 'beautiful football'.
The Samba stars are renowned for their unrivalled history of playing breathtaking football, but they are also the most successful country of all-time having won the World Cup on five occasions.
With a focus on flair and attacking, there are suggestions that their style of play and commitment to entertaining could prove their downfall, with only wasteful finishing and a good showing from goalkeeper Dida preventing Ghana from scoring in the second round win for the South Americans.
However, the veteran defender has stated that Carlos Alberto Parreira's side are geared to win, and that pure entertainment is the concern of the team's marketing men.
"We have an intelligent, winning football, with great champions," Roberto Carlos said in The Independent.
"That's what we have always been.
"To say 'beautiful football' is more about selling things.
"We are playing what we need to get through the rounds, everything is perfect."
