Steve McClaren was still at the helm of Newcastle on Wednesday night after his proposed meeting with managing director Lee Charnley failed to take place, according to Sky sources.

McClaren arrived at the club's Darsley Park training ground shortly after 8am where it is understood he met with his backroom staff before leaving again just after 4pm.

It was believed talks between McClaren and Charnley would then take place at St James' Park but instead of turning left out of the training ground in the direction of Newcastle's stadium, the former England boss turned right, toward his home.

It is not known why the discussions were not held.

Sky Sports News HQ earlier learned McClaren will not face the media for his weekly pre-match news conference which had been scheduled for Thursday but has been postponed.
