Should Ayala have seen red?

Sandwiched in between Middlesbrough's two goals at Sheffield Wednesday was this challenge from Daniel Ayala. Was the Boro man lucky to stay on the pitch?

Just moments after Mo Besic had finished off a stylish attack to give Middlesbrough the lead at Hillsborough, Steven Fletcher found himself with the ball at his feet, trying to advance down the left flank.

As he tried to hold off the impending challenge of the Spaniard, Ayala seemed to catch Fletcher with his arm, leaving the Scot on the floor, clutching his face in some distress.

Though he was later booked for a foul on Wednesday substitute Atdhe Nuhiu, Ayala escaped any punishment from referee Peter Bankes for the incident with Fletcher after 50 minutes.

Boro went on to climb to the top of the Championship after their eventual 2-1 win at Hillsborough, but should they have been playing with just 10 men on the pitch?
