Dundee United and relegated Livingston battled to a goalless draw at Tannadice

The hosts had chances while the Lions hit the woodwork and had a goal ruled out for offside and a penalty award overturned.

However, ultimately both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils - although with Aberdeen losing to St Mirren, United have cemented seventh place.

Home boss Jim Goodwin made four changes to the team that lost against the Dons at Pittodrie on Saturday with Bert Esselink, Pan Camara, Sam Cleall-Harding and Johnny Russell - making his first start after rejoining the club in March - coming in for Iurie Iovu, Krisztian Keresztes, Dario Naamo and the suspended Emmanuel Agyei.

Livi interim boss Scott Arfield also made four alterations to the starting line-up that was defeated by Dundee on Saturday with Stevie May, Emmanuel Danso, Cristian Montano and Robbie Muirhead replacing Joel Nouble, Barrie McKay, Mo Sylla and Danny Wilson.

Russell came close to making an immediate impact in just the second minute after Ryan Strain burst down the right and picked out the striker but his shot was blocked.

The visitors threatened with Lewis Smith trying his luck with a long-range shot that flew past home keeper Dave Richards' left-hand post.

Livingston then came agonisingly close to taking the lead when a May shot cannoned off the inside of Richards' post, with Kerr's follow-up effort blocked.

May threatened again soon after when he hit a fierce drive from 25 yards, with Richards having to palm the ball behind for a corner.

The hosts had a great opportunity just after the half-hour mark when Zac Sapsford found Russell, who played in Neil Farrugia - but Livi keeper Jerome Prior pulled off a stunning save to deny the frontman.

Livi then had the ball in the back of the net when Montano headed home from close range but the assistant's flag went up for offside, with the decision being rubber-stamped after a lengthy VAR check.

The visitors ended the half strongly with Muirhead seeing a blistering shot tipped over by Richards.

The hosts had an immediate chance after the break with a Sapsford header cleared off the line by Brooklyn Kabongolo.

Livi responded with May going on a lung-bursting run before unleashing a fierce shot that flew just inches past the post, with Kerr then coming close with a header.

United made changes just after the hour mark, with Owen Stirton having a quickfire chance but his shot from the edge of the box was comfortably gathered by Prior.

Livi were awarded a penalty in the 85th minute when Cleall-Harding was adjudged to have brought down substitute Joshua Zimmerman. However, referee Irvine was called over to the pitchside monitor by the VAR and decided to reverse his decision and book Zimmerman for diving.
