The first half of the Eredivisie season concluded with wins for Ajax and Feyenoord, but with PSV Eindhoven holding a four-point lead at the summit.
Ajax left it late against Excelsior, substitute defender Mike van der Hoorn breaking the deadlock within 60 seconds of his 82nd-minute introduction before fellow replacement Richairo Zivkovic completed a 2-0 win.
A 32nd-minute goal from Colin Kazim-Richards was enough for Feyenoord to win 1-0 at NAC Breda but they remain 12 points behind the leaders, who beat Go Ahead Eagles 5-0 on Saturday.
Ten-man FC Twente struck twice in stoppage time to beat Willem II 3-2 in a bizarre finish.
Despite Youness Mokhtar's opener, Twente fell behind to goals from Ali Messaoud and Rob Haemhouts and then lost substitute Renato Tapia to a straight red card when he had been on the field only eight minutes.
Against the odds, though, Andreas Bjelland equalised and Torgeir Borven snatched a dramatic winner.
Vitesse Arnhem won 3-0 against Heracles in the day's other game. All the goals came in the first half, Bertrand Traore's double sandwiching Zakaria Labyad's strike.
