September – Javier Hernandez – Deportivo 2-8 REAL MADRID, September 20

Javier Hernandez's first goal for Real was one to remember

In only his third appearance for Real and having come on as a substitute just 11 minutes before, Hernandez took down a long diagonal before unleashing a rasping volley with his weaker foot into the near top corner. He went on to score another two minutes later in Real's 8-2 victory.

October - Saul Berjon - EIBAR 3-3 Levante, October 4

Anything Scholes can do, Saul can do better. As newly-promoted Eibar enjoyed a fine start to their campaign, Saul's volley straight from a corner showed they had the class as well as the brawn to carry themselves in La Liga. It wouldn't be the last time we saw the striker…

November - James Rodriguez - Granada 0-4 REAL MADRID, November 1

Golden Boot at the World Cup, best goal of the World Cup, a £63million move to Real Madrid and goal of the month for November… all in a few unforgettable months for the Colombian. Rodriguez picked the ball up at an acute angle, volleying into the far top corner for his first of two in Real's 4-0 win.

December - Verza - ALMERIA 1-4 Real Madrid, December 12

Verza's first-half volley, hit from the edge of the area low past the reach of Iker Casillas, levelled the scores as Real chased a 20th straight victory in all competitions. But the night went from good to bad for the Almeria midfielder, seeing his penalty saved by Casillas in the second half with the scores at 2-1 before Cristiano Ronaldo wrapped the game up with another two goals.

January - Karim Benzema - REAL MADRID 4-1 Real Sociedad, January 31

The definition of one step back, two steps forward. Benzema took the roundabout route to goal by getting himself out of a cul-de-sac, playing a one-two with Jese, and another one-two with Isco, before curling superbly into the top corner from the edge of the area. The image of Isco with his head in his hands in disbelief says it all.

February - Luis Suarez - BARCELONA 5-0 Levante, February 15th

He may have taken time to get going, but the blistering finishing we saw from Suarez in the Premier League came to light in La Liga with this audacious overhead kick. It was only his fourth league goal but started a run of 13 goals in 13 games.

March - Saul Berjon - Levante 2-1 EIBAR, March 6

That man Saul again, and with another volley for only his third goal of the season. This time, with his back to goal and under the close attention of the Levante defence, Saul hooked a fine effort beyond Levante goalkeeper Diego into the corner of the net. Sadly, Eibar have won the same number of goal of the month competitions as games since mid-January…

April - Gonzalo Castro - SOCIEDAD 2-2 Deportivo, April 12

Better than Van Basten? Castro's first-time volley into the top corner from an acute angle drew comparisons to the Dutch master's goal in the Euro 1988 final from many, and from a few in a pocket of the north-west of England to Morten Gamst Pedersen's strike for Blackburn against Fulham in 2005. A strong contender for goal of the season...
