England manager Roy Hodgson believes his side have plenty to work on after their bore draw with the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.

The Three Lions travel to Slovenia next weekend looking to maintain their 100 per cent record in Euro 2016 qualifying but looked short of ideas at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday.

Hodgson mentioned Raheem Sterling as one player who failed to perform as well as he is capable of doing and called for better from his team as a whole.

"We set ourselves high standards and got nowhere near them in the first half," he said. "All credit to Ireland, they caused us problems, particularly with balls to the front players.

"I think we needed this game and this level of competition. Going into the game against Slovenia, there's a lot of things we want to improve on. We were marginally better in the second half, but we were very critical of ourselves.

"We've had a good run, a year almost unbeaten, but we came here believing if we played our best football we could win the game and we never got close to that.

"We didn't lose, but we have to accept there were a lot of things we could have done better."

With England well on their way to qualification for next summer's European Championships, Hodgson was keen to point out that they would have to perform much better to make any progress there.

"It's important we are critical and continue to set ourselves high standards," he added.

"We want to go to France and play teams there, and we'll have to play better than we did today."
