Kelly McDougall’s 88th minute equaliser kept Sunderland’s FA WSL 1 title hopes alive with a 2-2 draw against reigning champions Liverpool Ladies at the Hetton Centre.

Sunderland took a 23rd minute lead when striker Beth Mead opened the scoring from the penalty spot after being brought down in the box by Becky Easton.

But Liverpool levelled it up in stunning fashion five minutes later when England striker Natasha Dowie lobbed Sunderland goalkeeper Hilde Gunn Olsen from 30 yards.

And the champions went ahead midway through the second half when New Zealand international Rosie White ran clear and calmly slotted past Olsen.

The visitors looked like claiming all three points, but two minutes from time Abby Holmes forced her way to the byline before cutting back for McDougall to score a dramatic equaliser.

The result means Sunderland are a point ahead of Arsenal and two clear of Chelsea at the top of the table but both London sides are in action on Sunday.
