Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard will miss the rest of the MLS play-offs after learning he needs groin surgery.
The former Everton No 1 is expected to be out for around four months once he goes under the knife to correct an injury he suffered playing for the United States last week.
Howard was diagnosed with a fracture of the right adducter longus located in the upper groin after he was substituted during the CONCACAF Word Cup qualifier against Mexico.
His first season with the Rapids has been a good one, with Howard selected to the MLS Team of the Week on three occasions and securing a nomination for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.
He made two key saves during a penalty shootout when the Rapids edged past the Los Angeles Galaxy to reach the Western Conference final.
The Rapids now take on the Seattle Sounders in a two-legged match with the winner facing either Montreal or Toronto in the MLS Cup final on December 11.
