David Villa scored on his 100th appearance for New York City FC as Patrick Vieira's side beat LA Galaxy 2-1.
Anton Tinnerholm opened the scoring with a fierce volley in the 22nd minute - his first MLS goal - before World Cup winner Villa marked a milestone day with a simple tap-in 10 minutes later when Galaxy failed to deal with Ben Sweat's cross.
Jonathan dos Santos gave the visitors a lifeline when he diverted an Emmanuel Boateng ball into the net on the hour mark.
But Galaxy - who had Ashley Cole sent off for a second booking five minutes from time - could not find an equaliser, New York making it two wins from two at the start of the new campaign.
Elsewhere, Bradley Wright-Phillips was on target as City's rivals the New York Red Bulls eased to a 4-0 win over Portland Timbers.
Ben Mines finished a fine move in the 18th minute but the Red Bulls had to wait until the 77th minute to double their lead via a Wright-Phillips header, before Carlos Rivas' late double (80, 90+3) glossed the scoreline.
Atlanta United saw off D.C. United 3-1 in front of 72,035 at the Mercedez-Benz Stadium - an MLS single-game-record attendance.
D.C. had hung in doggedly after Josef Martinez's 24th-minute opener but two goals in three second-half minutes from Miguel Almiron (73) and Hector Villalba (75) ended their resistance and rendered Darren Mattock's 86th-minute strike a mere consolation.
Ethan Finlay scored twice as Minnesota edged Orlando 2-1 on Adrian Heath's return to Florida.
Finlay struck in the 12th minute and though Yoshi Yotun replied from the penalty spot, Finlay fired the winner 11 minutes from time when he met Mason Toye's flick-on from Miguel Ibarra's cross.
