Major League Soccer and Adidas have collaborated in a show of commitment to environmental sustainability by releasing special kits to be worn during matches this weekend.

All 23 MLS clubs have shown their support for the Parley for the Oceans initiative by releasing the kits - made of recycled plastic - gearing up to host the Third Annual Greener Goals Week of Service.

The players will wear the Adidas Parley 2018 MLS shirt during the eighth round of MLS matches this weekend, coinciding with Earth Day.

It is the latest move from MLS to make an increased efforts to identify ways to reduce our carbon footprint and raise awareness about environmental issues throughout the football community.

Other green initiatives conducted by MLS clubs have been promoted throughout this week across social and digital channels.

The environmental-friendly kits, built of technical yarns made using Parley Ocean Plastic, were first introduced in 2017 when four MLS clubs - New York City, Orlando City, LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders - donned the MLS x Parley kits on Earth Day.

The 2018 edition comes in two colourways, non-dye and carbon, differentiating the two teams in each game. The Adidas 2018 MLS Parley shirts - available for purchase at MLSStore.com and adidas.com - are crafted using plastic waste intercepted on beaches and in coastal communities.

The original plastic source has been reworked into technical fibres that can also be repurposed for use in either clothing or footwear.

"In partnership with adidas, we're excited to bring the MLS Parley kits to all 23 clubs as part of this season's MLS WORKS Greener Goals initiative," said JoAnn Neale, chief administrative & social responsibility officer for Major League Soccer.

"MLS is committed to reducing our carbon footprint and raising awareness about environmental issues, including plastic pollution. We're proud to support Parley for the Oceans and encourage the soccer community to create a cleaner, healthier environment."

In addition, MLS WORKS will share #GreenerGoals tips to educate the football community on ways to create a cleaner environment, including the reduction of plastic pollution.
