Atlanta United were indebted to a bizarre VAR ruling as they scored a stoppage-time winner to complete a dramatic comeback against San Jose Earthquakes.
Atlanta are the current leaders of the MLS Eastern Conference and were expected to have far too much for San Jose Earthquakes but appeared to have fallen 4-1 behind against the side who are bottom of the Western Conference.
San Jose appeared on course for only their second victory of the season when Chris Wondolowski appeared to give them a three-goal advantage, only for the referee to disallow the goal through VAR for a handball down the other end of the pitch.
Following the review a penalty was awarded to Atlanta which Josef Martinez converted for his MLS-record 29th goal of the campaign to cut the deficit in the 70th minute - marking the start of a chaotic final 20 minutes.
After Miguel Almiron levelled the scoreline three minutes later, Martinez produced the winning moment, five-minutes into added time to complete the remarkable turnaround and consign interim boss Steve Ralston to an opening defeat.
