Eastern Conference leaders Atlanta United preserved their four-point lead over rivals New York Red Bulls with a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake.

Atlanta are closing in on the MLS Supporters' Shield after a third straight win thanks to goals from Julian Gressel and Hector Villalba.

New York Red Bulls beat Toronto 2-0 to remain within striking distance with four games remaining, but they had to wait until the final 20 minutes to seal victory.

Alejandro Romero broke the deadlock before Derrick Etienne struck to put a shine on the result.

Elsewhere in the Western Conference, Los Angeles FC beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 to close the gap on leaders Sporting Kansas City to just a solitary point.

Walker Zimmerman scored both goals to help move his side into second spot, above Dallas, but Sporting Kansas can re-open a four-point lead with a win over Philadelphia Union later on Sunday, like on Sky Sports.

New York City were held to a 1-1 draw with Montreal Impact, who are now clinging onto a play-off spot, while Columbus Crew overcame the Colorado Rapids 2-1 thanks to Federico Higuain's winning strike.

Meanwhile, the Portland Timbers fell to a surprise 3-2 defeat at Minnesota United and Chicago Fire twice blew a lead as they were held 2-2 by the New England Revolution.

Orlando City played out a goalless draw with the Houston Dynamo, with LA Galaxy hoping to close the gap on the play-off spots when they take on Seattle Sounders on Sunday night.
