Robbie Keane netted twice as LA Galaxy eased past Toronto 3-0 to claim the outright lead in Major League Soccer.
The Irishman fired the opener on 22 and added a second just three minutes later when Landon Donovan fed AJ DeLaGarza whose cross was lashed home Keane.
Keane, who has taken his goal tally for the season to 19, was replaced by Alan Gordon who completed the scoring in second half injury time.
The win extends Galaxy’s undefeated run to 10 games.
Another two-goal striker in California was Rodney Wallace who secured three points for Portland who recovered from a goal down to beat San Jose Earthquakes 2-1.
Chris Wondolowski opened the scoring for the hosts on 56 – his 14th goal of the season – before Wallace levelled matters 15 minutes later when he located the top left-hand corner.
And with 74 minutes on the clock he unintentionally deflected Liam Ridgewell’s header into the net for the winner.
The Timbers move within one point of Vancouver Whitecaps as they seek a play-off spot in the Western Conference. The result leaves the Earthquakes without a win in 11.
Thierry Henry’s deflected shot on 47 was enough for the Red Bulls to edge past Houston Dynamo 1-0.
But New York were reduced to 10 men two minutes from time when Tim Cahill was shown a red card for a bad tackle on Oscar Garcia.
Elsewhere, Vancouver Whitecaps beat FC Dallas 2-0, while New England Revolution overcame 10-man Columbus Crew 2-1.
