St Mirren are hoping to sign Yoann Arquin before the Scottish Premiership relegation battle with his former club Ross County on Saturday.
The 26-year-old French striker left the Staggies at the beginning of the month but could return to Dingwall with the Buddies if a trial period goes well.
After the 2-0 home defeat to Aberdeen on Saturday, which left the Paisley club bottom of the table behind County on goal difference, player-manager Gary Teale confirmed he was hoping to have two new strikers for the trip north.
He told Saints' official website: "We have Yoann Arquin in training with us with a view to possibly signing him before the weekend.
"We are also looking at Ryan Jennings, a youngster from Wigan, to see if he can fit in with what we are doing.
"Predominantly we are looking at up top. We're looking for strikers as we have been a bit short up in that position this season as everybody knows with things not quite working out for one reason or another.
"So we're looking to freshen things up and losing Steven Thompson to injury for such a big part of the season has also been a problem for us."
