Phil Thompson believes Daniel Sturridge's future may lie at another club

Phil Thompson believes Daniel Sturridge will leave Liverpool at the end of the season to get more first-team football.

The England striker has started only five Premier League games so far this season due to illness and injuries, with Roberto Firmino and top-scorer Sadio Mane moving above him in the pecking order.

Sturridge returned to training this week after his latest injury setback, which has kept him out since February, and could feature against Bournemouth on Wednesday night due to the knee problem suffered by Mane against Everton last weekend.

But Sky Sports pundit Thompson believes the 27-year-old's bad luck with injuries mean he may need to revive his career at another club.

He told the Premier League Daily: "It's hard to build a team around Daniel because you wait so long.

"Even he would realise that. If you can't get him on the pitch enough it's difficult for the manager to decide how you are going to shape your team up.

"When he plays he is a threat to anybody, that's the shame of this. It's extremely difficult, he can't help it being injured.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirms Sadio Mane will miss the game against Bournemouth

"I don't think he will be at Liverpool and I think that [is right decision] for both parties, for Daniel and for Liverpool."

It comes after Klopp said it has been tough being without the former Chelsea and Manchester City forward.

"Unfortunately, Daniel has been out for four five weeks," the Reds boss said.

"Managing players is always a challenge. My job is difficult. I can't say all the time what players want to hear.

"But it's not more of a challenge with Daniel than with other players.

"Unfortunately we couldn't use him in this second part of the season as much as we needed."
