The Football League will begin their search for a new sponsor of the League Cup after Carling ended their deal.

Football League 'hugely grateful' to Carling

The Football League will begin their search for a new sponsor of the League Cup after Carling ended their deal. The Denver-based Molson Coors Brewing Co. took over from Coca-Cola back in 1998, with the competition first becoming the Worthington Cup until 2003 and then the Carling Cup until present. But the company will end their sponsorship of the competition at the end of this year's tournament in February. Football League chairman, Greg Clarke said: "This is the first time in 14 years that this sponsorship has been available in the marketplace and we look forward to offering potential sponsors the rare opportunity to put their brand on one of domestic football's major competitions. "Molson Coors have been outstanding partners and have played an important part in helping us restore the competition's status and public appeal. We are hugely grateful for the support they have given us." Chris McDonough, Molson Coors' marketing director in Britain, added: "We continue to be very proud of our work with the Football League in transforming the perception of the competition amongst football fans and despite the contract being up for renewal in 2012 we are continuing to discuss the future of the competition with the Football League." Liverpool are the most successful club in the history of the competition, which began back in 1960, winning seven titles, but in recent seasons top Premier League clubs have sometimes opted to field their fringe players.
