Shrewsbury beat Checkatrade Trophy holders Coventry City in opening round

​​​​​​​Shrewsbury Town inflicted a 3-2 defeat on holders Coventry City in the first round of Checkatrade Trophy fixtures.

Joe Riley's free-kick deep into injury time at the end of the game won it for the Shrews.

Charlie Adam was in the Stoke City under-21s side beaten 1-0 by Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Sunderland also included several senior players in their side defeated 3-1 at Scunthorpe United, with Jack Rodwell and Donald Love in the starting line-up.

Newcastle United were the only one of the seven invited teams to win on Tuesday night, beating Crewe 2-1.

Oxford United recorded a 6-2 win at Stevenage and Bristol Rovers won 5-1 at Wycombe.
