Cristiano Ronaldo has predicted Portugal will one day win "big things" as he assesses his nation's chances at Euro 2016.

Ronaldo scored twice as Portugal finished off their preparations for Euro 2016 with a thumping 7-0 home win over Estonia on Wednesday.

Portugal will face Iceland in their first match of Group F in France, with Austria and Hungary the other two teams in their group.

A major international honour is one of the few achievements missing from Ronaldo's CV as despite his best efforts Portugal have only ever made one major final. That was in 2000 when Greece stunned the footballing world by winning the title, beating Ronaldo's Portugal 1-0 in the final in Lisbon.

Looking back on the defeat, the Real Madrid star thinks a similar run to the latter stages of a major tournament is on the horizon.

"That was a difficult moment, because losing a match, especially here in Portugal, against Greece - we knew we had a unique opportunity to become European champions," Ronaldo told Uefa.com.

"But that's a part of football. Football has taught me a lot of things: nothing is certain. What is true today can be a lie tomorrow, a team can be very good one day and awful the next. So it's all part of that.

"If it happened, it's because God willed it and we have to think about the future: that the future of the national team will be positive and Portugal will win big things, like a European Championship or a World Cup."

Portugal failed to get through the group stages at the 2014 World Cup but they have a solid record at the European Championships, making at least the quarter-finals in all of their six appearances at the competition.

Ronaldo, who could become the first player to score at four different European Championships, admits the tournament has a special place in his heart.

"European Championships and World Cups are always special competitions," he said.

"The final stages are always beautiful moments, unforgettable moments in a player's career, so this will be another European Championship on my CV. Obviously I'm happy about it and I also feel privileged to have been able to participate in many final tournaments.

"And evidently it's a delicate moment, a special moment because anything can happen. I think Portugal are in a good run of form, we had a very positive qualification."
