Russia head coach Leonid Slutsky has resigned following his side's poor performance at Euro 2016.

The 45-year-old, who also manages CSKA Moscow, led the national side to the finals in France where they picked up just one point in the group stages - a draw against England - before losing out to Slovakia and Wales.

Slutsky offered his resignation following the defeat to Wales and the Russian Football Union confirmed his departure on Thursday afternoon.

In a statement on its website, the RFU said: "We would like to thank Leonid Slutsky, who helped Russia to qualify for the 2016 European Championship, for his professionalism and wish him all the success in his coaching career.

"News regarding the new coaching staff of the Russian team will be published on the RFU's official website as soon as there is any information."

Slutsky, who replaced former England head coach Fabio Capello in August 2015, won his first five matches in charge of the national side.
