Hoffenheim will be without striker Vedad Ibisevic for the first two months of the season due to a thigh injury.
The Bosnia international, who has scored 38 goals in 82 Bundesliga matches for his club, tore muscles in training and is now not expected to return until October.
Ahead of Saturday's tricky season-opener at Hannover, new manager Holger Stanislawski confirmed the setback.
Stanislawski told
Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung: "As far as I am concerned, the injury will put him out for up to eight weeks. This is a blow, no doubt.
He added: "We look forward to seeing him recover as he is a valuable part of our plans."
Meanwhile, Stanislawski has stated he will keep Andreas Beck as his captain this season, despite the full-back only having one year left on his contract and a failed move to Juventus.
Last week Hoffenheim completed the signing of Zimbabwean striker Knowledge Musona on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee from South African side Kaizer Chiefs.
