Oxford have signed defender Phil Edwards on a season-long loan deal from Burton.

Edwards has played a key part in Albion's rise to the Championship in recent years but he has yet to feature in the second tier.

The 30-year-old, who has made over 100 appearances for the club since his arrival from Rochdale on a free transfer in 2013, has linked up with the U's and will spent the campaign back at League One level.

"Phil is too good of a player to just sit around on the bench and he's done too well for the club over the past two or three years or so," said Burton boss Nigel Clough.

"Oxford came in and Phil said he wanted to go so we've allowed it to happen, but more for Phil.

"For selfish reasons we could have kept him around in the squad just in case but he's too good of a player for that."

Oxford head coach Michael Appleton told the club's official website: "Phil has bags of experience and as luck would have it I saw him play last week for Burton and he did well. He knows his role, knows the game and we are really happy to have him here."
