Xemi Fernandez has been allowed to leave Oxford United by mutual consent.
The midfielder joined the U's last summer as a free agent from Barcelona B but has struggled to hold down a place in the first-team.
Xemi, 22, made only four starts in League One, his last appearance coming in Oxford's 7-0 defeat to Wigan in December.
"It hasn't worked out here and I'm sad to be leaving because it is a fantastic club," the Spaniard said.
"But at the same time I want to be playing football and that means a new adventure for me elsewhere, which is exciting."
Sky Sports also reported on Tuesday the club have enquired about re-signing Marvin Johnson on loan from Middlesbrough.
The 27-year-old winger, who joined Boro on Deadline Day in the last transfer window, has been told he has no future under Tony Pulis at the Riverside.
