Women's football: Gilly Flaherty scores birthday goal as Chelsea Ladies top FA WSL

Birthday girl Gilly Flaherty was on the scoresheet as Chelsea Ladies made a return to winning ways by defeating Birmingham 3-1 to go top of the FA Women’s Super League.
Ji So-Yun opened the scoring for Chelsea with a header, before Flaherty added the second with a powerful shot which found the top corner of the net in the second half.
Aoife Mannion pulled a goal back to give the visitors a lifeline but in-form England striker Eni Aluko scored Chelsea’s third to condemn Birmingham to their first league defeat of the season.
Birmingham, who have two games in hand on the teams above them, slipped to third in the table following Liverpool Ladies’ win 1-0 home win against Notts County.
Substitute Katie Zelem volleyed home the all-important winner with her first touch of the ball after coming off the bench in the second half.
Arsenal Ladies continued their recent resurgence with a comprehensive 4-0 victory at Manchester City Women to move up to fifth in the table.
England midfielder Jordan Nobbs opened the scoring with a stunning 40-yeard lob before second half goals from Danielle Carter, Rachel Yankey and Casey Stoney completed the rout.
Saturday’s FA WSL game saw Bristol Academy hammer bottom-of-the-league Everton 5-2 at the Stoke Gifford stadium.
A double from both Natalia Pablos Sanchon and Nikki Watts alongside Corinne Yorston’s deft lob overwhelmed the visitors, despite goals from Kelly Jones and Brooke Chaplen.
