Mauro Vilhete was the two-goal hero as Barnet sealed their return to the Football League after a two-year exile with a 2-0 win over Gateshead on the final day of the Conference season.
Barnet held a one-point lead over second place Bristol Rovers prior to kick-off, meaning they went into Saturday’s home game with with their fate in their own hands.
All the final season games kicked off at 5:15pm and after 20 minutes of play Rovers had leapfrogged Barnet after Jake Gosling opened the scoring for them against Alfreton.
The nerves were jangling as the news reached The Hive but six minutes later Vilhete nodded in Sam Togwell’s cross to restore their position atop the table.
Ellis Harrison and Matty Taylor struck further goals for Rovers, allowing them to take a three-goal lead into the break and all-but securing victory at the Memorial Stadium, while leaving the visitors' Conference status hanging by a thread.
But four minutes into the second half Vilhete grabbed his second, prodding the ball home from close-range when Gateshead failed to clear a corner.
Rovers went on to rout Alfreton 7-0, condemning the Derbyshire side to relegation, but it made no difference at the other end of the table as Barnet clinched the title with one point to spare.
Third-placed Grimsby, Eastleigh and Forest Green will do battle with Bristol Rovers in the end-of-season play-offs for the right to join Martin Allen's side in the Football League.
Barnet manager Martin Allen told Sky Sports News HQ: “It’s great for the supporters, since we moved ground a few years ago and a few miles across London.
“It was a sell out today – six thousand there – the place was rocking and we’ve been top of the lead from wire-to-wire.”
