Murat Yakin will step down as head coach of Spartak Moscow after failing to secure a European place for next season.

The 40-year-old former Swiss international has only been at the club for a season but the board regarded a sixth-place finish as not good enough.

"Spartak management and the club head coach (Murat) Yakin decided to cancel the contract by mutual agreement after the end of the current season," the official club site stated.

Yakin made his name as a coach with Basel, leading them to successive league titles and home and away wins over Chelsea in the 2013 Champions League.

Meanwhile, CSKA Moscow qualified for next season's Champions League with a late equaliser on the final day of the Russian Premier League.

CSKA had been set to miss out on a place until the 88th minute, when Swedish midfielder Pontus Wernbloom scored to make it 1-1 against FC Rostov.

That was enough to give CSKA the second Champions League spot ahead of FC Krasnodar, who drew 1-1 with Dynamo Moscow.

Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg, who wrapped up the title on May 17, ended their season by beating Lokomotiv Moscow 1-0.

At the bottom of the league, Torpedo Moscow and Arsenal Tula are relegated.
