Antoine Griezmann, Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo? We look at the Euro 2016 Golden Boot race
Friday 1 July 2016 06:39, UK
The race for the Euro 2016 Golden Boot is still wide open as we approach the quarter-final stage in France.
With just eight teams left in the competition, there are still a whole host of players in the running for the prize.
Here is a look at the current leading contenders according to Sky Bet's odds...
Antoine Griezmann (France, 3 goals, 0 assists) - 3/1 with Sky Bet
Currently joint-top goalscorer at Euro 2016, Griezmann is the favourite with Sky Bet to win the Golden Boot.
Griezmann failed to score in France's first match against Romania, but came off the bench to net the late opener against Albania in their second game. He then added two more in their last-16 encounter with Republic of Ireland as Didier Deschamps' side came from behind to win 2-1.
Gareth Bale (Wales, 3 goals, 1 assist) - 6/1 with Sky Bet
Bale currently leads the way in the rankings due to him having an all-important assist to his name alongside his three strikes so far.
The Welshman netted once in each group game before forcing Gareth McAuley to turn the ball past his own goalkeeper as they beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in the last 16. One thing counting against Bale, though, is a tricky quarter-final tie against Belgium.
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, 2 goals, 2 assists) - 6/1 with Sky Bet
At one point it looked like Portugal wouldn't even make it out of the group stage, but now one more goal could see Ronaldo fly to the top of the Golden Boot rankings.
Poland will prove stern opposition, though, having only conceded once so far this tournament to a Xherdan Shaqiri wonder goal in the last 16.
Romelu Lukaku (Belgium, 2 goals, 0 assists) - 7/1 with Sky Bet
Lukaku could have been dropped after an poor opening display against Italy, but he repaid his boss Marc Wilmots' faith in him by netting twice in the 3-0 demolition of Republic of Ireland in their next game.
Unfortunately for Lukaku's chances, though, he failed to register a goal or assist as they thrashed Hungary 4-0 in the last 16, something he will be looking to put right against Wales in the quarter-final.
Mario Gomez (Germany, 2 goals, 0 assists) - 8/1 with Sky Bet
Gomez didn't even appear at Euro 2016 until coming on as a late substitute in Germany's second group game, but has netted twice in two games since being thrown into the starting XI by boss Joachim Low.
To clinch the Golden Boot, though, Gomez may need to break down an impressive Italy back line in the quarter-final, a nation Germany (or West Germany) have never beaten in eight attempts at a major tournament.
Dimitri Payet (France, 2 goals, 1 assist) - 14/1 with Sky Bet
Payet had two goals and an assist after two games of France's campaign, but he was only used as a late substitute in their final group match and failed to register in their last-16 win over Republic of Ireland.
A goal against Iceland in the quarter-final, though, could launch the West Ham playmaker right back into contention.
Other contenders
Graziano Pelle (Italy, 2 goals, 0 assists) 16/1 - Pelle has two goals so far in the competition and is certainly worth a shout if Italy manage to progress past Germany in the quarter-finals.
Alvaro Morata (Spain, 3 goals, 0 assists) 20/1 - Morata is currently joint-top with three goals but can no longer win the Golden Boot as Spain are out of the competition. He could still potentially finish in the top three for an each-way bet.
Olivier Giroud (France, 1 goal, 1 assist) 28/1 - The Arsenal striker is some way back with just one goal to his name so far, but one big performance could change everything for the man leading the line for the tournament favourites.
Nani (Portugal, 2 goals, 0 assists) 28/1 - A favourable draw for Portugal could see Nani fly into contention.
Thomas Muller (Germany, 0 goals, 1 assist) 33/1 - Muller is yet to score at Euro 2016 but such is the German's pedigree at competitions that he can never be ruled out.
Odds correct as of 11:30 BST on Thursday, June 30.
