WRIGHT SLAMS BHOYS FANS

IAN WRIGHT has blasted the Celtic fans who turned on him after the club`s shock Scottish Cup defeat against Inverness Caledonian Thistle last week.

The 38-year-old striker, who completed a move to Burnley on Monday, praised the majority of Celtic fans, but slammed those who went too far after the game that led to John Barnes` demise as Bhoys boss.

"A few morons covered my car in spit and they were shouting obscenities at myself and Regi Blinker."

"I felt I was in a war crisis in Kosovo not involved in a football result that wrecked John Barnes` career as Celtic manager.

The veteran striker, speaking to The Sun newspaper, also had criticism for the treatment his former England team mate received at the Glasgow club, claiming there were people who had knives out for Barnes from the start.

``I believe that John simply did not get a fair crack of the whip as coach. I just can`t help thinking a lot of people have finally got what they wanted.

``Celtic won nine of their first 10 games, which was a better start to the season than the last time Celtic won the title, yet as soon as we lost our first there were rumblings.

"There was always someone waiting to slag him off and now they`ve got what they wanted."

``For me, Barnes` sacking has little to do with his ability as a coach, tactically, he was spot on."

"There is no doubt he will become a successful coach and when he walked away from Celtic he was very upbeat about his future.``

``Barnesy was well aware he did not have full 100% backing when he took over, but, like anyone who has football in the veins, when a job like Celtic is offered there is absolutely no way on earth you can say no."

Despite the fact that Wright is playing in the lowest level since he joined Palace from Greenwich Borough fifteen years ago the veteran striker insists his enthusiasm for the game is undiminished and rejects claims that he is playing on for financial gain.

``I`ve been slaughtered as some kind of football mercenary and that I was playing up in Scotland just for the money.

``But that`s rubbish and I hope this proves just how much I want to play football because I love the game so much.

Wright meets up again with Burnley boss Stan Ternent who was coach at Crystal Palace when Wright started life at The Eagles.

``I`ve known himt since I first turned professional and he has been on at me for years to sign for him, so I`ve finally given in to him,`` Wright added.

``I just hope I can make some kind of contribution to their promotion push but the place has given me a really good feeling.

``If Burnley can get into the play-offs it means I could finish my career with a play-off final."
