HESKEY JOINS REDS - AT LAST

LIVERPOOL have sealed a record £11 million mega-deal with Leicester for the services of England international Emile Heskey, with the striker poised for an instant debut against Sunderland on Saturday.

The long-awaited transfer is finally being processed in the wake of Heskey`s stirring performance against Argentina at Wembley a couple of weeks ago, and his Worthington Cup success at the same stadium days later.

City have caved in to financial pressure to allow their star turn to leave, and the 22-year-old has always harboured a genuine sense of affection for the Merseysiders.

Although Michael Owen is on his way back to full fitness, the injury problems that have dogged both the young attacker and Robbie Fowler, has caused Gerard Houllier to bring forward a deal to sign Heskey in the summer.

With the robust front-runner now a fully-fledged Red, he could help fire Liverpool towards a place in the Champions League and begin repaying some of his huge transfer fee.

Heskey is expected to undergo a medical on Friday, in time to make his debut at Anfield at the weekend. Although personal terms need to be finalised, it is understood that they will not pose any problems.

Liverpool later confirmed that the deal is set to go through in time for the player to make his debut on Saturday, providing he passes the routine fitness check.

There will now, inevitably, be fresh speculation concerning Fowler`s position at Anfield. Leeds would lead the chase for his signature, should the 24-year-old be made available.
