ARSENE CONFIRMS SUKER WILL GO
The 32-year-old marksman signed a two-year contract at Highbury, when signing from Real Madrid, but there was an option for the deal to be reviewed midway through its duration. And Arsene Wenger has confirmed that The Gunners will not be pursuing that option.
"Davor has done really well for us but we have not been able to use him as often as he would have liked," admitted Wenger. "A player of his ability deserves to be playing regularly, so we will be letting him go.
"There is no animosity. He has paid the price for the way Thierry Henry has exploded this season. It means that I have Davor, Thierry, Dennis Bergkamp and Kanu for two positions.
"At his age, he needs first team football. He has done well for us when we have needed him. In fact, he still has a big part to play for us, in the Premiership and in Europe, for the rest of the season."
As Suker wants to remain in London, it is no a case of Hammers boss Harry Redknapp finding the resources to offer the Croat the salary that he wants, to link up with his international colleague Slaven Bilic at Upton Park.
The move shows the difficulty that even the top clubs, such as Arsenal, have with the squad rotation policy. Teddy Sheringham may decide that the time is right to quit Manchester United this summer, and, although Gerard Houllier has insisted he wants four top strikers at Anfield, it will be interesting to note their willingness to spend lengthy spells on the sidelines.
