GREGORY BLASTS BARTELT

JOHN GREGORY has announced that Gustavo Bartelt will not be given a permanent contract by Aston Villa, and accused the Roma forward of treating his stay at Villa Park "like a holiday".

The 25-year-old Argentinian was signed as cover for the then injured Dion Dublin in February, but he has not made a first team appearance – spending his time in the reserves or the physio’s room.

The Villa Park coach blasted the attitude of the striker, saying: "He is going back to Roma when his loan spell is over – if not before.

"He has really disappointed me. He hasn’t quite done what I thought he would. I think he came here and treated it like a holiday – certainly for the first month.

"I thought he would be able to adapt to the way the game is played over here, the pace and power, and it was a good chance for him after not playing much for Roma.

"But when he comes into training with his sunglasses on top of his head when it’s foggy you start to think ‘hang on a minute’ - and he will not be staying with us."

Bartelt (pictured) has cost Villa close to a quarter of a million in wages, and Gregory quipped: "The chairman – Doug Ellis – is really chuffed to bits. He is delighted with the whole scenario!"
