VILLA LAND ALPAY

ASTON VILLA have signed Fenerbahce's Alpay Ozalan, in a deal that will net the Turkish side £5.6 million.

Alpay, 27, is a key member of Turkey's national squad, but he blotted his copy-book when he was dismissed against Portugal in the quarter finals of Euro 2000.

The centre back was expected to be an integral figure for Fenerbahce next term, but the big-money bid proved too large to resist for the Turks.

It is believed that Alpay has signed a four-year deal, opting for The Villans after a move to Olympiakos collapsed.

Despite Sunderland and Manchester City waiting in the wings to sign Villa's unsettled England international Ugo Uhiogu, John Gregory has rejected an initial bid of £6 million from The Citizens.

The stopper has been at Villa Park for nine years, and Gregory stated that the offer was not big enough.

"The bid does not match our valuation and has been rejected," Gregory declared.

The problem that Villa face is that any sale will result in West Bromwich Albion taking 50 percent of the fee due to a sell-on clause.
