SWINDON CLOSE IN ON ALEXANDER

WEST HAM striker Gary Alexander is close to sealing a £300,000 move to Swindon Town, although the relegated Robins could face competition for his signature.

The 20-year-old spent much of last season on loan at Exeter, where he scored 19 goals as The Grecians avoided relegation from the Nationwide League, being awarded the Player of the Year in the process.

However, he returned to Upton Park to find that Croatian striker Davor Suker had been added to the strikers roster, meaning that his chances of finally breaking into the team were further limited.

Hammers manager Harry Redknapp has accepted a £300,000 bid from Swindon, who dropped to the Second Division this summer, but admitted that the County Ground may not be his final destination.

"It looks like Gary might be going to Swindon," admitted Redknapp. "That's the offer that has been made and we're happy with that, although there are a few clubs in for him.

"It's thanks to Exeter and what Gary achieved there last season that he's got his chance. He's a smashing lad, but it's hard for him because there are a lot of strikers ahead of him.

"I've got Di Canio, Suker, Kanoute and others, and he needs to get out and play a few games and get more experience."
