MACCA TRANSFER LISTED BY REAL

REAL MADRID have placed midfielder Steve McManaman on the transfer list for $13 million (£8.64 million) after leaving him out of the squad for their pre-season friendly with Sporting Lisbon.

The former Liverpool winger moved to the Bernabeu last summer and helped the club to Champions League success in his first season, but he has been declared "transferable" by the capital club.

The arrivals of Luis Figo and Flavio Conceicao cast doubt on his future, culminating with him being told by manager Vicente del Bosque on Tuesday that he would only get very limited first team opportunities this season.

McManaman told the club that he did not want to leave and that he would stay and fight for his place in the side, but his agent Colin Anderson has reportedly been told that he has now been made available, after being dropped in favour of Flavio for the visit to Portugal.

The Whites did not want a player on such a lucrative contract to be sat in the reserves at the Bernabeu, and it now appears that Italy could be his destination, as his agent seeks to find a Serie A club interested in his services.

Middlesbrough failed in an attempt to sign him, and reports in Spain suggested that Aston Villa and Liverpool would look to bring him back to the Premiership, but he said that he did not want to return to England.

It has also been suggested that Barcelona will make a move for him, but Real would be reluctant to sell him to their arch rivals.

McManaman and new signing Claude Makelele - who is unfit - have been left out of the 19-man party to travel to Lisbon, joining Ivan Helguera and Fernando Hierro back in Madrid.

Squad in full:
Cesar, I. Campo, Solari, Munitis, Squares, Karanka, Figo, Savio, Salgado, Julio Cesar, Celades, Guti, Geremi, Roberto Carlos, Flavio, Raul, Morientes, Sanchis, Tote.
