REDONDO SCOOPS EUROPEAN AWARD

FORMER Real Madrid star Fernando Redondo has been voted the best player in last season's Champions League by the forty-two managers whose clubs contested the competition.

The Argentinian midfielder was the star of a Madrid side, which triumphantly won Europe's greatest club football prize for a record tenth time with some terrific performances.

Redondo, so influential for Madrid and a firm fan favourite was then surprisingly sold during the close season to Italian giants AC Milan for a fee of £11 million.

He will pick up the award next Thursday at a gala dinner in Monte Carlo on the eve of the draw being made for this season s competition.

Redondo follows in the footsteps of Ronaldo who won the award in season 1997-98 when at Barcelona and Manchester United's David Beckham who won the award when United claimed the Champions League trophy in the 1998-99 season.

Redondo will be hoping to win the trophy again this season with his new club depending on whether Milan make it through their qualifying tie with Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia.
