LUA-LUA SOLD TO MAGPIES

THE PROTRACTED transfer of teen starlet Lomana Tresor Lua Lua seems set to be concluded after the two clubs, Newcastle and Colchester United, finally agreed on a £2.25 million deal.

News this morning seemed to indicate that the deal was on the verge of breakdown after Lua Lua's agent - his uncle and the player met Newcastle's Director of football Gordon Milne and agreed personal terms, only for the U's to stall on concluding the transfer.

But now it would seem to be a formality for the deal to go through, barring any last minute hiccups with the medical.

The addition of Lua Lua means Bobby Robson has another striking option to pick from, although the player cannot really be tied down to a position and Kieron Dyer is the closest that the Newcastle boss has allowed to a free role and maybe a career as a winger is on the cards.

The unpredictable Zaire born Lua Lua is an undoubted talent, although how he is nurtured into the first team picture will be a major discussion point for Robson and his army of coaches.

Colchester's manager Steve Whitton used the 19-year-old sparingly and has done a brilliant job in not rushing Lua Lua along or placing too many expectations on his shoulders.

A press release from the Second Division side read: "Colchester United announce that they have accepted an offer of £2.25 million from Newcastle United for the transfer of Lomana Tresor Lua Lua.

Peter Heard, the Colchester chairman, said: "We were anxious not to lose Lomana but we had to respect the strong wishes of the player and his family.

"Although he was happy at Colchester, it is perfectly understandable that he would want to play at a Premier club.

"The transfer fee gives us the opportunity to establish financial security for the Club and will assist with the cost of the new ground.

"We all wish Lomana every success for the future."

Manager Whitton added: "Although we would have preferred to keep Lomana I was concerned that the constant speculation about his future was affecting his form.

"Bearing in mind the possible abolition of the transfer system I felt the time and fee were right and recommended acceptance to the Board."
