RADEBE LOOKING TO INVEST IN WITS

LEEDS UNITED defender Lucas Radebe is set to invest in a football club in his native South Africa, and he is currently in discussions with Premier League side Wits University to buy a 50% share in the club.

Radebe met with directors of the South African club when he returned to the nation recently, and news of the player's intentions were met very favourably by officials at the club.

"Basically, Lucas Radebe is looking at putting something back into the game," said on director. "He considered countless options where he could make a real and meaningful contribution.

"He could have easily offered a couple of million to buy equity at one of the big teams, but at a club like Kaizer Chiefs, for example, which enjoys millions in sponsorship, that wouldn't make any difference.

"At Wits they have certainly some of the best facilities when you consider Marks Park, and they have the potential to become a really big institution when one considers the latent support base of students."

Another director added: "Football has become commercial and the club is changing to a profit-making concern. Negotiations are proceeding and we hope to finalise our discussions within the next two months or so."

It is believed that Leeds could form a partnership with Wits if the deal does go through, giving the Premiership club first option to buy any players at the South African club, although chairman Peter Ridsdale was quick to stress that these plans were at a very early stage.

"We have asked to be kept informed of possible options, but no discussions have taken place yet," explained the Elland Road supremo.
