SENATE TO INVESTIGATE RONALDO SEIZURE

FORMER national team coach, Mario Zagallo is set to testify before a Brazilian Senate commision on Tuesday, investigating Ronaldo's health problems before the final of the 1998 World Cup.

In one of the strangest stories ever surrounding the game's showpiece match, Ronaldo was initially not named in the Brazilian starting line-up against France, with Edmundo taking his place, but ended up playing the full 90 minutes in his country's 3-0 defeat.

Unbeknown to the watching world, Ronaldo - who had been one of the stars of the tournament up to that point - suffered mysterious convulsions before the game and underwent a huge risk by playing.

There have been allegations that the team's sponsor, Nike, forced Ronaldo to play against medical advice - charges that the sportswear manufacturer steadfastly deny.

Other witnesses the comission is expected to call include Ronaldo himself, team doctor Lidio Toledo, Brazilian Soccer Confederation President Ricardo Texeira and Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos, the Internazionale striker's room-mate, who first reported the seizure.

Before this incident, Ronaldo was, by common consent, regarded as the world's best player, but sadly this incident proved a watershed in his career and since then he has played just 26 league games suffering two severe knee injuries that have kept him on the sidelines for most of the last two years.

Still only 24, the Brazilian striker aims to make a return to the Inter side before the end of the season.
